How to Remove a Password From a PDF

To remove a password from a PDF, open an unlock tool, enter the current password, and download an unprotected copy. You must know the password — this doesn't crack unknown ones.

How to unlock it

  • Open Unlock PDF and add the protected file.
  • Enter the password that currently opens it.
  • Download the unlocked copy — it opens with no prompt.

Why remove a password

Once a document is safely stored, the password can become a nuisance — re-typing it every time you open a monthly statement, or being unable to merge or edit the file while it's locked. Removing it (on a file you own) makes it usable again.

An important limit

This tool removes a password you know — it does not crack or bypass unknown passwords. If you've lost the password, there's no way to recover the contents; that's the point of encryption.

Need to re-protect it?

After editing, you can add a fresh password with Protect PDF.

Private

Unlocking happens in your browser — the file and password never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can this unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?

No. It only removes a password you can supply. Unknown passwords can't be recovered — that's how encryption is meant to work.

Is the unlocked file really unprotected?

Yes — the tool rebuilds the document without encryption, so it opens with no prompt in any viewer.
